What Is Whole Body Vibration Therapy (WBV)?

Whole Body Vibration and How It Works

A Bit On Exercise Physiology

During normal strength exercise routines our muscles go through a ‘progression of muscle fatigue’. This means that when a specific muscle is first stimulated, a small portion of muscle fibers is used. As the workout continues, the core muscle fibers will begin to fatigue. Once core muscle fibers fatigue, other fibers are now recruited. An example is if you bend at the knees and hold a squat position, eventually your quadriceps and hamstring muscles would begin to tire. If you continue to hold this squat position, your leg muscles begin to shake and stabilizer muscles now activate to allow you to hold the position. This ‘progression of fatigue’ is the eventual wearing down of all muscle tissue including white and red muscle fiber types.

How Whole Body Vibration (WBV) training works – First understand the basic structure of your muscles. There are 3 main types of muscle fibers: Slow-Twitch (red fibers, used in maintaining posture, and endurance activities like a marathon), Fast-Twitch A (used in walking, running, sprinting) and Fast-Twitch B (white fibers, used in rapid, intense movements like throwing a ball or weightlifting). Most skeletal muscles are a mixture of all 3 types of fibers. Their activation depends on the type of activity performed. The inability of a muscle to maintain its strength and contraction or tension is called muscle fatigue. It occurs when a muscle cannot produce enough ATP (cell energy) to meet its needs.

With vibration training, all three types of skeletal muscles are instantaneously called into service because of the near-immediate level of fatigue. No longer is there a ‘progression of muscle fatigue’ asin normal strength training. That’s something even well-conditioned people don’t achieve in their workouts due to limited time, understanding, or ability to perform all the different exercises needed to activate all the muscle fiber types. With muscles stimulated to near peak capacity, WBV maximizes muscle strength and flexibility, weight loss can be achieved, cardio health and circulation improved, bone health increased, anabolic hormones secreted and neurological reflex pathways balanced.

FACT: Full ‘progression of muscle fatigue’ requires lots of energy, motivation and possible wear and tear on ligaments, tendonsand joints. With WBV like the 3G Cardio AVT™ Vibration Machines, the “progression of muscle fatigue” is no longer done in stages or over a period of time; it is instantaneous. All muscle fibers are recruited at the same time in order to respond to the vibration movements. WBV causes muscle contraction in response to the plate vibrations and movements — up to an incredible 25-50 times per second, resulting in rapid contractions and accelerated results – with less wear and tear on ligaments, tendons, and joints!

HOW?

The 3G Cardio system of WBV creates instability the body senses and reflexively contracts muscle tissue involuntarily to stabilize and react to the stimuli. 3G Cardio AVT Vibration machines vibrate at adjustable frequencies up to a staggering 50Hz to utilize the body’sown reflexes. In fact, up to 97% of the muscle fibers are activated instantaneously, compared to maybe 20% using traditional exercises, including weights — in a lot less time.

WHAT CAN IT DO FOR YOU?

There is arguably not a better method to safely and effectively fatigue muscle tissue than vibration training. Numerous findings on WBV training include remarkable increases in:

  • Jump height
  • Overall strength and conditioning
  • Flexibility in the low back, hip joints, and spine

WBV training has also been found in countless studies to help people with:

  • Vertigo
  • Bone density (osteoporosis)
  • Chronic joint pain
  • Nitric Oxide production (circulation)
  • Balance, coordination, and gait function. An example is J.G. Gianutsos, whofound that people with Parkinson’s disease showed dramatic progress in walking ability.

We highly recommend WBV for overall bone and neurological benefits. That’s why it’s an integral part of our . The positive effect on our bone-building osteoblast cells using WBV is impressive and highly successful in most cases! We offer WBV at our office.

HOW OFTEN?

Positive results using WBV Training can be seen in as little as 1-3 minutes a day! Due to the low level of exertion required, it really does not take much to feel the effects. For maximum benefits using WBV training, it’s ideal to perform a series of exercises. We suggest starting with 1-3 minutes, gradually working up to 5-10 minutes per day, 2-3 times aweek.

Question: Does WBV replace regular exercises?

Answer: No. We encourage exercise variety. However WBV offers what we feel is unrivaled safety and efficiency for most people as an adjunctive therapy.

Question: How long will it take to see or feel benefits?

Answer: Everyone is different, and it depends on your goals. For example, strength and balance improvement is often seen in 3 weeks, while bone density improvement may take months.

Question: What are the contraindications?

Answer: We don’t recommend WBV during pregnancy, or within 2 months of joint replacement surgery or bone grafts. However, as with any exercise, always consult your doctor first.
