A Bit On Exercise Physiology
During normal strength exercise routines our muscles go through a ‘progression of muscle fatigue’. This means that when a specific muscle is first stimulated, a small portion of muscle fibers is used. As the workout continues, the core muscle fibers will begin to fatigue. Once core muscle fibers fatigue, other fibers are now recruited. An example is if you bend at the knees and hold a squat position, eventually your quadriceps and hamstring muscles would begin to tire. If you continue to hold this squat position, your leg muscles begin to shake and stabilizer muscles now activate to allow you to hold the position. This ‘progression of fatigue’ is the eventual wearing down of all muscle tissue including white and red muscle fiber types.
How Whole Body Vibration (WBV) training works – First understand the basic structure of your muscles. There are 3 main types of muscle fibers: Slow-Twitch (red fibers, used in maintaining posture, and endurance activities like a marathon), Fast-Twitch A (used in walking, running, sprinting) and Fast-Twitch B (white fibers, used in rapid, intense movements like throwing a ball or weightlifting). Most skeletal muscles are a mixture of all 3 types of fibers. Their activation depends on the type of activity performed. The inability of a muscle to maintain its strength and contraction or tension is called muscle fatigue. It occurs when a muscle cannot produce enough ATP (cell energy) to meet its needs.

Question: Does WBV replace regular exercises?

Question: What are the contraindications?
Answer: We don’t recommend WBV during pregnancy, or within 2 months of joint replacement surgery or bone grafts. However, as with any exercise, always consult your doctor first.
